M. G. E. Society profile

Maharashtra Girls' Education society was established on 2nd october 1884. It was indeed a milestone in girl's education. Following the direction given by the social reformist Mahatma Jotirao Phule and his revolutionary wife Savitribai, M. G. E. Society took the lead and established Huzurpaga, the second school for girls in maharashtra.

With the concerted efforts of Justice Mahadev Govind Ranade, Dr. Ramakrishna Gopal Bhandarkar, Shree Shankar Pandurang Pandit, Dr. Vishram Ramaji Ghole and Shree Vaman Aabaji Modak, the M. G. E. Society was established. Their vision was to introduce modern education to Indian girls which will enrich and empower their lives. Therefore, Huzurpaga school was established with the aim of imparting education to girls and simultaneously it sought to encourage culture and discipline among its girl students. Since the past 139 years the society has come a long way and its journey has been most fulfilling and meaningful.

From its very establishment, this 'sacred pillar of light' (deepmal) is shining in the field of education in Pune. During its inception year a secondary school was established at a time when in India only primary level schools were functioning for girls.

Initially the school's classes were conducted at Walvekar wada and Sardar Kibe wada. Shrimant Chintamanrao Patwardhan's land was selected on Laxmi Road to build the school which provided a secure environment to enhance girls' education. We have had the honour of having our late Prime Minister Mrs. Indira Gandhi, residing at our hostel as a student. Our girls have made their mark in different fields like science, art, literature, drama, music, education & social service.

Today the society provides quality education to girls right from K. G. to U. G. Around 10,000 students are studying in various institutions run by the M. G. E. Society. The society did not restrict its schools and colleges to the Laxmi Road campus alone, but also opened a branch at Katraj. This branch provides education from K. G. to junior college level. Gradually a need for a modern english medium school was felt and hence an english medium school was started recently.

Keeping in mind the need to develop women's potential and believing in women's empowerment through quality education, the M. G. E. Society, established a senior college in commerce in September 2001. Besides this, envisaging a requirement for professional courses catering to industrial adaptability, B.B.A. and B.B.A. (C.A.) degree courses were started.

The founders started a Senior College Huzurpaga, Smt. Durgabai Mukunddas Lohiya Mahila Vanijya Mahavidyalaya (Formerly Huzurpaga Mahila Vanijya Mahavidyalaya) in September 2001. The idea for starting this college was to educate women and equip them to face challenges in the coming future. Thousands of women have secured higher education from our institution.

The college is affiliated to the Savitribai Phule Pune University and is recognized by the Government of Maharashtra. It is located in the heart of the city and provides quality education in Commerce in a secure environment. 'Quality' and 'Huzurpaga' have become synonyms and this fact is known to all. The M. G. E. Society constantly encourages and supports the college in its academic development. A shining example of this is the brand new building with the latest infrastructural facilities which has been built for our students on the Laxmi Road campus.

In 2001 the college started with a good number of students with two divisions. Gradually we got a tremendous response and now we have around one thousand plus students. Besides the B.Com degree we also offer B.B.A. and B.B.A (Computer Applications) degree courses.
